Document is protected but thinks it is!

Brand new lap top, its owner is new to Word 2007, but not Word. Why does a
new doc not let me type in there it says THIS MODIFICATION IS NOT ALLOWED
BECAUSE THE SECTION IS LOCKED.
How can it be locked I havent touched a thing and when I go to the Review
tab look @ securtiy & protection nothing happens when I click the Protect
documentbutton it is not highlighted & wont click. HELP! This is so
frustrating!

This sounds very much as if the text has been "grouped" using a content
control. Do you have the Developer tab showing in the Ribbon? If yes, is the
"Group" button in the "Controls" group activated?
