Document appears from internet w/unreadable characters-help?

I open a file from a trusted site and the document comes up with the correct
title, but below, there are all these strange characters. A window is up
also regarding "conversion". Not knowing this information, I click on
US/English. This doesn't do any good. Now, days after, I go to some other
documents from the same site and they all come up as unreadable. How do I
have the document/s come up in readable, english? And I never initiated a
conversion to start.
How can I undo this, and will my documents come up normally. Thanks for
your help.
