DOCTYPEs

Am needing guidance please. Whilst trying to find out why
my site has suddenly disappeared from No 1 position on
Google (and now is not even listed at all) - I did a W3C
Validation of the site. Result was "Fatal Error: No
DOCTYPE specified! it reads as if this is an absolute
necessity but many IT people I talk to don't know what I
am worried about.

I have located suggested doctype declarations from
alistapart.com but being a complete IT newbie I have no
idea which one to use and how I know I choose the correct
one? I designed site using FP 2002 and was not aware I
would need to start adding to HTML other than creating
title tags etc. The following HTML is at the top of my
home page at the moment: If anyone can point me in the
right direction or tell me to stop worrying I'd be
grateful. Thanks

<html xmlns:v="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:vml"
xmlns:blush:="urn:schemas-microsoft-com:blush:ffice:blush:ffice"
xmlns="http://www.w3.org/TR/REC-html40">

<head>
<meta http-equiv="Content-Language" content="en-gb">
<meta name="GENERATOR" content="Microsoft FrontPage 5.0">
<meta name="ProgId" content="FrontPage.Editor.Document">
<meta http-equiv="Content-Type" content="text/html;
charset=windows-1252">
<link rel="File-List" href="default_files/filelist.xml">

Thanks for that, this is interesting and makes me feel
better. Did seem queer that I've never had a Doctype and
yet Google ranked us for 2 months in that state. Living
in hope we suddenly appear again.
