to *activate* it.
No. Why would you want to? It's completely anonymous and doesn't
hurt you in any way (unless, of course, you want to pirate it and
install it on multiple computers).

Activating is mandatory, it's their security to make sure
people don't pirate the program. When activating, you
should be able to just punch in the code that came with
the installation CD.
Registration is optional. I've never bothered with
that 'cause it's not mandatory, so don't ask me any
questions about that. ;p

Why does Microsoft make the Registration the first window
following XP installation...well before Activation?
Why don't they state that registration is optional?
Why don't they give some considerations for or against
registration?
Why don't they state their Privacy Policy regarding personal data
collected from registration, like other companies?
What do they use the personal data for that they collect through
Registration?
If a person has provided personal data through registration, what
is the appropriate address for writing to Microsoft to tell them that
their personal data is not to be used for any advertising or marketing
purposes of any kind? TIA

Your response baffles me. In addition, a search at Microsoft.com
with the words "XP Registration" brings up nothing regarding this item,
and when that window appears in the XP loading process, one has not
even reached the internet setup window. Also, a search at Microsoft.com
with the words "Privacy Policy" does not return any description of that
subject, yet it is a very hot topic, and very important these days with so
many efforts to protect the privacy of individuals and limit access to
their data to reduce unwanted intrusions.

Yeah, stupid me, I typed in Privacy Policy in Search because I wanted
to read the privacy policy (at http://www.microsoft.com). How stupid
can one get! Is it possible that they are even more stupid though, because
they did not provide a link to their privacy policy when one does a search
for privacy policy? Hope you get my drift.
I should have known better than to add the word Policy in the search for
Privacy Policy...that is really stupid of me, as you so politely pointed
out. Even though the site says "Tip: For better results, try entering more
words," (that is a cut 'n paste from their website, so maybe I'm starting
