I've been lurking here for several weeks to learn about these infernal
machines and have asked a couple of questions and had really good
answers..thank you all.!!

I'm using XP Home 2002 with a laptop on DSL and I understand that other
people can come into my machine and tinker with it remotely. If this is so,
are there companies that do that sort of thing for hire? For instance, I
might try to take off Outlook Express and Instant Messenger, and then again I
might not after reading all the instructions. Whew(sp?) With 18 Gigs
available I think I could use the space. Anyway, just wondering if that
service is out there as I've never seen an ad about it.

Here in the Ozarks there are no techs available for hands on help inside 150
miles.

There is no such thing as Windows XP Home 2002.
You have one of the following:

Windows XP Home Edition
Windows XP Professional
Windows Media Center Edition
Windows Server 2003
Windows Tablet Edition
Windows XP Professional x64 Edition

but there is no "2002"

Means it was bought in 2002. Guy in another forum said it's a good idea to
put the year it was bought. It's a Gateway 450 bought in 2002. Now be a good
dog and answer the question..:-)

To answer the question in your subject line: no. This is a public Usenet
newsgroup hosted on Microsoft servers. While some MS employees
occasionally post in the groups, the majority of helpers are volunteers
who do not work for the company. "Volunteers" means we don't get paid.
Some of the regulars - like me - do computer repair/tech support or
other IT-related work for a living and some do not.

It would be better for you to find a local tech and create a working
relationship with him/her by taking the machine to him/her, even if
this initially means a long trip. Once the tech is familiar with you
and your machine, they may be willing to do long-distance tech support.
If you don't "put a face to a name" and just pick some company or
person from the Internet, you're asking for trouble.

Hi,

Version 2002 is printed on the front of the retail box of WinXP.

Right click on My Computer and select Propertiers and you will see
Version 2002 also.

Thank you Malke: Guess I'll take a trip to Springfield now that gas is up to
2 1/2 bucks a gallon..:-( With this remote capability I wonder if that sort
of thing might become a legit business, working peoples machines I mean.
Anyway thank you.

Your gas is cheap compared to ours in California. Ours is cheap compared
to (insert-name-of-state-or-country).

I have no idea if remote assistance would become a viable business but I
rather doubt it since it would have done already. It has always been
possible to use some sort of remote control with operating systems.

I know I wouldn't be interested in that sort of business. It doesn't
matter anyway; you have to work with what you've got.

Comment on remote assistance: how to pay for it?
