"Do not turn off or unplug..."

I'm getting the message, "Do not turn off or unplug your computer; it will
turn off automatically....Installing update 1 of 1."

My computer has displayed that message for more than eight hours. I assume
the update has stalled. How do I recover? I'm using XP Pro.

What update?
Is there any hard drive activity?
After 8 hours it is safe to reboot since something is wrong.
