Do memory slots have different access times?

Hi,

I currently have 2 x 256 MB memory chips on a mobo with only 2 slots &
I want to add a 512 MB chip.

I don't much about this stuff but I thought if I left 256 MB in slot 0
& put the 512 MB in slot 1 then it would stop all the 'work' being
done on the 512 MB and not increase temperature an' stuff.

In another thread someone suggested putting the 512 MB in slot 0 to
decrease access times - is this a problem?

Also, to access slot 0 I first have to remove the AGP card and I don't
like touching more hardware than I have to :)

Exactly what are you trying to say?

I'm wondering if memory is used sequentially, eg from location 0
upwards, and if so whether or not it might be better to put the
smaller chip in the lower address range so that both chips share the
'workload', thereby helping with heat dissipation.

Sorry if it doesn't make sense, if I knew what I was talking about I
wouldn't need to ask questions :)

There is no "sharing of workload" when it comes to memory. Whether the
larger or smaller stick is in slot 0 doesn't matter, if it works in that
config then it works, not any faster or slower.
