i don't know which so am going to replace all 3 with one large HD bigger
than all there capacities. would it be possible to copy the enirity of my HD
with vista installed to the new HD without a reinstall??/?

FWIW, can you not disconnect one drive at a time, and so identify the
failing drive when the noise stops?

No. Copying files will not get the job done. You must either use a utility
that will produce an image of the boot drive you wish to clone, then use the
utility to put the image on the new drive, or you must reinstall.

There are several utilities that will allow you to clone a drive, but do
your research to make sure the tool you choose is certified as
Vista-compatible.

i'm not bothered about keeping the 3 drives the cost of one larger drive is
not that great anyway.

so if i clone an image of the drive onto my new HD i should be able to just
boot from this.
