Not if you want to get anything done in any semblance of real time.

256MB bare minimum, 512 best choice, despite what MS may say.

It's enough to "run" XP, but it will be quite slow, and you'll have a lot
of swapping out to the swapfile. I have two similar machines running xp,
one has 256mb of ram, the other 512. The difference is obvious

As a practical matter, no. You want at least 256 MB, preferably 512
MB. Memory's not that expensive; you may as wll upgrade to 1 GB all
at once rather than in increments, because it's only a matter of
time till 512 MB isn't enough.

Only just barely. It should not be the 'recommended'amount. 256 will
make a great difference; depending on workload you might need more. See
