Do I HAVE to have Win Messenger for remote asistance?

I was trying to use remote assistance and it refused to connect because I
had uninstalled Windows Messenger as unnecessary. I have MSN IM installed.
I know I can use email but that takes a lot longer. I tried reinstalling
Win Msngr and it wont work....have I erred somewhere?
 
Yes, you need to have Windows Messenger installed for remote assistance.

Yes you will need Windows Messenger. However, if you've reinstalled Windows Messenger and it
still is indicating that the feature isn't installed, simply reboot and try again.

If you still have the problem, download and run the following file, and then reboot (assuming
your Windows is
in C:\Windows, otherwise you'll need to edit this in a text editor like Notepad):
