DNS / VPN conflict

Hi,

I'm successfully connecting a XP SP2 client to a SBS 2003 SP1 server through
VPN. Everything worked fine until (after months) I ended up in a (hotel)
network that uses the same internal IP addresses (192.168.0.1, 192.168.0.2)
we use on the SBS for modem/router/DHCP and DNS/SBS.

"As a consequence" the DNS setting (192.168.0.2) set up in the client TCP/IP
settings, attempting to find the SBS DNS server per VPN, now finds the local
192.168.0.2 hotel site which has (obviously) nothing to do with the SBS DNS.

To change the SBS DNS to a different IP address is of course doable but it
seems that there should be different solutions, e.g.,
- How can I ignore the hotel network IP addresses that conflict with the
VPN SBS DNS settings?

Looking forward to any advice/guidance there is. Thanks in advance.....
Joachim

Hi, Joachim -

192.168.* is a private network and is for all practical purposes,
nonroutable. It'd be pretty much impossible to hit the hotel's site
from outside the hotel but I have seen this behavior on my own laptop.

I think what you're seeing is a cached page - maybe it'd be a good idea
to clear your Temporary Internet Files - in Internet Explorer, select
Tools --> Options and click the 'Delete Files' button - then close your
browser and try hitting the site again.

Hope this helps -

Allan,

Thanks for this. I might have miscommunicated.

The issue is that I'm in the foreign (i.e., hotel) network and am trying to
hit my home network/server through VPN.

In all other networks (wireless or not) it works just fine. With the
hotel's network IP settings the local hotel settings seem to "over rule" the
DHCP/DNS settings I'm searching/needing to connect to the home network
resources even though the VPN connects just fine.

Hope his makes sense.

Ah. I gotcha now ;-)

Can you check your connection settings in Control Panel --> Internet
Options? Click the 'LAN Settings' button and uncheck the box that says
to automatically determine settings?

Hope this helps -
