dns problems

have 2 win2k dc's - they are part of a single domain split over several
sites connected by a wan - at this site dns seems to be working fine on
dc1 but dc2 has problems ... if i do a simple test to this server it
pass's but a recursive test to other servers it fails, also i noticed
today that a few times my win2k workstation seemed to go dog slow and
then seem ok again (dhcp on dc1 hands out dc1 & dc2 as dns servers) ...
.... also a yellow marker appears on the dns server in the tree but i
dont have any event errors to say what the problem is ... everything
appears to be configured same as dc1, ive tried restarting the server
and the service but no joy ...

what is the yellow markers meaning on the server and why would a
recursive test fail (what does a recursive simple test try and do?)

The yellow markers are there because it failed the recursive test you may br
able to get rid of this by giving your DNS server a forwarder. If all DNS
have the same zones and belong to the same domain you can forward to your
ISP's DNS, make sure your ISP's DNS you use support recusive queries by
running nslookup against them. Some ISPs especially the large ones have
recursion disabled on their authoritatve DNS server, but have other DNS
servers for internet resolution.300202 - HOW TO Configure DNS for Internet

Becareful if your DNS servers are forwarding to your other internal DNS servers. This could cause a forwarding loop which can easily overload DNS with
looping DNS queries.
