DNS issue

I have existing windows 2000 Domain with AD installed; I
am looking to have another site connected to the existing
Domain via VPN. I am looking to have DNS on the other
site as well as the first one. Could you please explain
to me how the two DNS server will communicate and how I
can add the other domain to an existing domain tree?

Thanks

Hi Robbie,

Domains and Site do not have to match. You are able to span a domain through
many sites, and you are able to have multiple domains in one site. And every
mixture - you are able to have some domains being in one site but having some
domains which span multiple sites.

See the following link:

Understanding Active Directory - Sites (particular the second section "How do
sites relate to domains?")

Hi Robbie,
Need a bit more info.

I will be more than happy to tell how this will work but I first need to
know one crucial peace if information.

"how I can add the other domain to an existing domain tree"
Does the remote office currently have a domain or is this going to be brand
new? If brand new this will be very easy, if it has an existing domain you
want to migrate into your current domain, this is a bit more difficult.
Please elaborate.

Thank you,

Hi Alan, All

Thank for your reply.

Basically, we have a domain let's call it xyz.com. The
site will have a new domain lets call it: o.xyz.com . The
new domain will have a new DNS server. What I want to
know do I have to configure the new DNS server to look up
to the existing server for it to communicate with AD mind
you the DNS server is a standard primary DNS server. The
new domain is a brand new domain.

Thanks

Robbie

Hi Robbie,

you have to configure a delegation for o in the zone xyz.com which points to
the new server, and create the o.xyz.com-zone on this new server. On the server
of the o.xyz.com zone, configure the Properties of the DNS-Server and set the
forwarder to the server which holds the xyz.com-zone.
