following error:

Most likely the DNS server are you are trying to Register to is NOT a Win2K
DNS server. If you are using YOUR IPSs DNS you can not automatically
register your machines DNS. Remove the check box.
If it is Your DNS server then you're in the wrong newsgroup.

Lets get straight what "we" are talking about.

I have assumed by your post that you have a Win2K WS that is giving the
error "Registration of the DNS record failed with the following error: DNS
operation refused".

This usually means that the DNS server you are using (TCP properties of the
WS) is NOT a Win2K DNS server. And since you posted where you did, I assume
that YOU are not the admin for that DNS server nor do you have access to
that server's Admin, (or else you would ask him). Thus you are most likely
trying to use your ISPs DNS. And they will NOT allow WSs to add DNS entries.

By default Win2K and XP will install the option to register the DNS. (MS
assumes you are on a Win2K network).

Go to the Properties for your TCP settings, on the DNS tab remove the check
box "Register this addresses in DNS". And the error will go away.

If you are on a Win2K Network see that system's admin. If you are the system
admin for the DNS server ( you speak of Zone Properties) then you have asked
the wrong question in the wrong news group. (You would need to set the
server to Allow Automatic Updates).

Thank you for your detailed reply. Just to clarify for the sake of anyone
following the convo. The system in question is a Win2K PDC which serves as a
DNS server to a local network. Any address not found by the server is
forwarded to our ISP's DNS to which I do not have access. After reviewing
your responce I realized the problem was not with teh config of my DNS
server but in the TCP settings of the Server which in fact was set to
register with my ISP's DNS. thanks again.

Glad to help
