Try Doug's link, below. Click on XP-FIXES, then on this item...

"Restore Default File Associations Easily"

Follow the instructions.

Hi Doug,

Go into the Control Panel. Click on Folder Options. Click File Types.
Locate the DLL extension and highlight it. Click Delete and click Apply if
needed.

However, I tried to change the option to open .dll files with Microsoft
Paint, but the operating system would not allow it.

I would back up your data files and wipe the XP partition clean and
reformat and reinstall XP, because something is out of whack to have allow
you to do what you did.

Normally, there is no file association for *.dll files. Delete the
association in File Options> File Types. Programs needing to access .dll
files will know how to use them without any added input from the user.

Did you associate Paint with .dll files as stated in your first post or did
Paint get added to the "Open With..." list in the right click menu seen
when you right click on any .dll? If it got added to the Open With... list,
don't worry about it. It's presence is not hurting anything.

What happened was, I right-clicked on a .dll file and then chose Paint in the
Open With option. I also mistakenly clicked the box that opens all files of
that type with Paint. I hope this makes it a little more clear. Thank you
again for your assistance.

You're most welcome. As I said before, leaving things as they are won't
hurt anything or stop .dll files from being used as intended. Normally,
users don't open this file type directly so the mismatch is just some extra
bits in the registry that won't ever come into play. Programs will continue
to use the *.dll files as always.

On the other hand, if this really bugs you and you prefer to attempt an
"undo" -- you could run System Restore and choose a restore point that is
date/time stamped before the mis-association took place. After the restore,
any updates or software that were added *after* the date of the chosen
restore point will need to be reinstalled.

Weighing the two options in the balance - effort involved and potential
problems with reinstalling software and updates, I would go for option one
(leave things as they are) but that's just my personal opinion. Yours may
differ. :)

Agree. After all, it's only a visual thing really, .dlls finish up a Paint
icon - that's it :)
