dl145 opteron 250

Hi,

I am on a low budget and I am currently considering buying dl145 1u
server with one 250 opteron cpu (socket 940), but it supports an
extension to 2 processors.

The question is - will I be able to upgrade to 280 processors?

And one more - I am considering installing Redhat ES edition which
supports 2 processors. Does anybody know how will Redhat treat 2 dual
core chips - like 2 physical or 4 logical processors. And maybe it's
not a very good choise to set readhat - what you think of other *nix
OS'es supporting dual core's and multiprocessors?

Cheers

Yes. You will need to remove your 250-series (single-core) processor
before dropping one or two 280-series (dual-core) processors in the
system, but it should be a nearly drop-in replacement. Of course,
you'll need to reconfigure the OS for multiprocessor support.
And one more - I am considering installing Redhat ES edition which

From Redhat's page here:

http://www.redhat.com/rhel/compare/server/

"3. A CPU chip containing multiple hyper-threaded or multi-core
processing elements is counted as a single CPU."

Now that is in regards to their legal license, ie you are legally
allowed to run Redhat ES with 2 dual-core chips.

From the technical standpoint though, Linux WILL show this as 4
processors.

I've never been much of a fan of Redhat, though it's been a few years
since I've tried it. SuSE might be a better bet, or if you're a bit
more experienced with *nix OSes and don't require the commercial
support than maybe Gentoo.

What are you using the server for? You may find it much more
affordable to use another linux distro besides red hat. Their
licensing fees can be quite steep.

I think Tony covered the bases. I'd recommend getting a singel 280 in
the system right now, as long as the upgrade isn't too much. If you
are *sure* you will upgrade, it may be worth it...
