Distributing updates to users

T

Tony Williams

I am creating a database that is split into FE and BE. The backend will be
on a server and there will be some 20 or so users. I have read on this
newsgroup people talking about producing updates and distributing them to
users and the users copy is automatically updated. Can someone start me off
as to where to look for a way to do this?
TIA

Thanks. Free too.
My experience is that Windows 98 users ran into trouble, but 2000 Pro and XP
Pro do just fine.

Oh? What happened for Win 98 users?

Errors with Smartmdb,

No idea what that is.
corruption on the freshly downloaded client....

That can happen if the user is already in the MDB and clicks on the
shortcut after you've made an update available. The utility copies
down the MDB but then the first copy of your app gets rather confused.
<smile>

I only
had 4 Win98 clients, so I just manually gave them the FE....we are going to
an ADP solution next month, so I didn't feel like investigating too much.

Not sure that will make a difference.
Sorry I don't have the specific error messages....could have come from
anywhere I suppose. No proof it was your utility :)

<smally sigh of relief>

typo...that's what I get for shooting from the hip...

StartMDB.exe was mentioned in the error messages...(at least they
rhyme...sort of...)

Now that I think about it, the first client I set this up for has win98
also, and has never reported an error to me, so it must be local. Service
packs or something perhaps...

Either way, I still recommend the AutoFE updater to any client with more
than two users. :)
