Dissapearing tolbar buttons

In word 2003 I have tried numerous times to customise the toolbars by adding
extra commands that I use often. However whithin a few times of opening word
later (qute often just the next time I open word) I find that all the extra
commands that I put in the toolbars are gone.

I then tried to create my own toolbar with the normal commands and extra
ones to replace the standard toolbars, but the 2nd time after that opened
word the new toolbars were gone, don't exist anywhere. Does anyone kow
anything about this?

The toolbar changes are (by default) stored in normal.dot and should be
saved automatically when you close Word, or better still you should get a
prompt to save normal.dot when you close Word (the option set at tools >
options > save) - which if you have Word as your Outlook editor, this means
when you close Outlook also.

Either you are not saving normal.dot with the changes or normal.dot is being
lost (maybe by overzealous IT staff - if this is a company computer). The
usual reason for normal.dot not being saved is interference from a third
party add-in, with early versions of Acrobat 7 being the worst offender -
see the last section of
