Displaying the Sigma Symbol as a Column heading

O

Excel ver 2000

I would like to use the Sigma symbol as a character of a Column heading.

I have two questions:
Does Excel have the ability to display these symbols as text? What is the
process for doing this? I tried looking at the WingDing fonts but could not
find the symbol. Where can I obtain a keyboard mapping of the WingDing
fonts?

Thank you

The Capital Sigma is Unicode 03A3. I don't think it's included in any of
the Wingdings (1-3) fonts; even if it were, I would not recommend using
it because you would have to change the font for that cell to Wingdings
- and Excel gets sometimes a bit temperamental with fonts.

The Capital Sigma is included in the standard Arial font in the position
I mentioned (U+03A3). AFAIK Excel does not provide a method to enter
Unicode characters from the keyboard. You can get it into your workbook
in several ways:

1. Get a program which assists in entering Unicode characters. Unicode
Keyboard (<http://www.fanix.com/unicodekeyboard.html>) is the first
to come in a search. I believe there are many more, some free.

2. Use the CHARMAP program and copy/paste from there.

3. MS Word, Wordpad and some others allow Unicode entry; type: 03A3 and
press Alt+x, then copy that to your workbook. See
<http://www.unicode.org/faq/font_keyboard.html>. Turns out that most
Office edit boxes have the same functionality. So the fastest way to
get a Capital Sigma would be to open the Save As... dialogue and
enter
03A3<ALT+x><Shift+LeftArrow><Ctrl+C>
in the Filename box and paste (Ctrl+V) into the desired cell in your
workbook.
