Displayed Rows and Columns Excel 2000

I import data to a worksheet and want to show only the
necessary number of rows and columns - not all 65,536 rows
and all 256 columns. Then when I scroll down I want
to "stop" at the last row of data and when I scroll right
I want to "stop" at the last column of data. I've been
able to "hide" the blank rows and blank columns, but not
stop when I scroll very fast with the "Intellimouse"
scrolling feature. I've also tried the "delete rows"
and "delete columns" buttons after selecting the unused
rows and columns and that does't seem do it either. I
can't believe the built-in help screens don't have the
solution for such a basic issue, but I sure can't find
it. Anybody know the quick answer? I'm fairly new at it
so I may not understand "ranges" of cells, etc. but I sure
can learn if that's what it takes. Thanks for any
assistance.
