display settings adjusted automatically

Margo Guda

I recently repaired my windows xp pro installation, and must have OK'd a
dialog box asking to automatically adjust my display settings. I don't
like the settings I get, and every time I reboot, they get readjusted.
How can I get my display settings to stick? WHere do I turn off the
automatic display adjustment?
Please help.
Thanks in advance.

Hi Margo,
When you done your Installation did you install the Video Driver for your
motherboard from the Manufacturer who built your Motherboard if your Video
Card integrated into the motherboard?.
Don't download the update or the driver for your Video from MS it is
advisable not to do,just from the Manufacturer.
Which you have know is the default Driver from Windows, so know the
Manufacturer of your Motherboard and Install the Right Driver for your Video
Dispaly.
HTH.
Please let us know.

nass, thanks for your reply.
As far as I can see (in the driver properties for the display) the
driver was not reinstalled or updated. I have the latest driver from the
manufacturer. I have a separate graphics card, and have disabled the
on-board graphics. Everything worked well before. And my main display
problem now is this automatic adjust, which resets my screen to 800x600
every time I (re) start windows. My graphics card is a 64MB nvidia pci
card, if that helps.

Perhaps there is a corruption problem with your profile and the settings
aren't being saved? Try create another and see if it's working there?

Hi Margo,
nass, thanks for your reply.
=> As far as I can see (in the driver properties for the display) the

So your nvidia pci Driver not installed, try to Right click on your Display
card and Select Properties, then on Driver Tab click on Install Driver and
when Prompted insert the CD/Floppy to install the Spec Driver for it and when
finshed Reboot for the settings to take effect on the system/Platform.

=>I have a separate graphics card
What is it and is it working properly and the Driver installed for it.

Check for IRQ Conflict between the two cards, hence you said you have
another separate Graphic Card.

If I understood right your Card is the one not integrated on the
Motherboard, so if you can Unplug it and Plug it again in it's Slot and then
Reboot, the system should detect it and Prompt you for the CD/Floppy to
install the Driver for it.

Nass, you misunderstood, I did not make myself clear obviously. See below.

Yes it IS installed, and it is the latest driver.

I meant I have both onboard graphics capability (but disabled) and an
nvdia pci card. The correct driver is installed for the card.

I tried that, but the only thing that helps with is I can now reload my
settings a little quicker. I still get the autoadjust. My driver is the
correct and latest model, downloaded from nvidia's website.

In that case have you installed the .inf file for your monitor? that
would be the other possible cause for it to be picking a "safe resolution"

M

Margo Guda

That is one strange thing. When I got the graphics card, the system no
longer saw my monitor, but used it as the standard monitor. The vendor
said this was normal, to be expected because the expected way for my
system to behave would be via the onboard graphics. He said just put the
resolution and refresh rate that I had before, and it would work fine.
And it did, for a while - until I did the repair of the windows
installation. I have a Hyundai ImageQuest L50 LCD flatscreen, supposedly
plug and play. How would I install the inf file for it?

B

Bob I

I didn't see a "correct .inf" in a quick google. But if you got a CD
with the monitor, it should be on there. And you can use update driver
in Device Manager, Monitor, Properties, to load it.

Bob,
I found & installed the inf file for my monitor. It did not help; my
system still resets the resolution on boot every time.

Sometimes there some setting in display properties for this adapter
called "advanced settings" and the Adapter can be configured to load a
particular "scheme". Please go to Display Properties, Settings, Advanced
button, and look for "Accelerator driver" or similar.

M

Margo Guda

Bob,
Not sure what you mean, on the advanced tab the only thing related to
acceleration is the troubleshooting tab. I don't have any option to load
an adapter scheme. There is a setting where you can have the system ask
for permission to change the graphics settings, and that was put as
automatic (it doesn't ask), but when I changed that and restarted the
system, nothing had changed, the resolution is still switched back,
automatically, to 800x600. Aaargh!

After Clicking Advanced button, you should have tabs for "General,
Adapter, Monitor, troubleshoot, Color management, and a "Special
Accelerator or other tab" installed by your adapter driver software. The
special tab is where the settings can be "forced" for various
configurations.
