When I send an e-mail message with Outlook, my name, Frank van der Zee,
always appears as 'Frank Van der Zee' or 'Frank Van Der Zee'. What must I do
to get my name properly (de-)capitalized?

What type of account? What version of Outlook?

Mary, thanks for replying. Alas, this is not the solution - I already have
all autocorrect options de-activated...

Dear Brian Tillman, sorry for not mentioning this information in my original
post.
Type of account: POP/SMTP (under user information - your name, my name is
capitalized correctly)
Version of Outlook: 2003 (11.8118.8122) SP2, Part of Microsoft Office
Professional Edition 2003
Thanks, Frank

What mail editor are you using? Do you have yourself in your Contacts
folder? If so, how does it look there?

Dear Brian,

Mail editor: In Tools-Options-Mail Format, I have HTML selected, but I
deactivated Word 2003 as the editor for e-mail messages. (i used to have this
option selected but it was often causing annoying delays).

My own account in the Contact list:
Full name: Frank van der Zee
Check Full name:
First: Frank
Middle: Van Der (if I change this to van der, Outlook immedeately changes it
back)
Last: Zee
File as: Zee, Frank van der
Display as: Frank van der Zee
All other fields (except for the e-mail address) are empty.
If I send myself a message, my name shows up as Frank Van der Zee.

If I change these settings (Full name check) to:
First: Frank
Last: van der Zee
and I send myself a message, my name still shows up as Frank Van der Zee.

Thanks, Frank

I'm not convinced that you'll be able to do anything about this problem, but
one last thing to check: click Tools>Options>Spelling and uncheck "Use
AutoCorrect when Word isn't the e-mail editor" and see if that affects it.

Dear Brian,
I had it already unchecked. I verified what would happen if I checked it,
and afterwards uncheck it again. In both cases, it does not make a difference.
I'm afraid this is a small kind of bug in Outlook, an 'intelligent' control
that neglects the existence of 'van'-people. (In my home country, The
Netherlands, we are at least a million with a last name starting with 'van
de(r)', 'van', 'van het' 'de' etc.). Of course, it's not really a big deal -
I only do not like it.
Thanks anyway for all the effort you made! + Have a good weekend!

In the US, the practice is often to capitalize the leading portions of names
such as yours. We'd tend to write "Van Den" or combine them as "Vanden".
Perhaps it's an artifact of the Outlook language. Do you have the Dutch
version?

Dear Brian,
Yes, I am aware of the transformation of Dutch names in the US. No, indeed,
I don't have the Dutch version (as I tend to work in different countries, I
find it quite inconvenient to use local versions; right now, in Portugal, I'm
glad to have all software in English, not because of the different language,
but rather because of the different shortcut keys). Maybe this explains the
problem indeed...
Thanks again!
