I experienced a power outage this morning from 9:30 to 11:45. My computer
had nothing running on it but Aol IM. I turned the computer on and it came
to my desktop in 4 bit color and 640x480 resolution. Whenever I tried to
change it through properties it would not apply it, but simply go back to the
4 bit and resolution. My monitor is a 17" Samsung and a GeForce 6600GT
graphics card which both seem to be functioning properly.
Any help would be appreciated.

Reinstall your video card drivers. Get them from Nvidia's website. You
should probably uninstall the old ones first; follow any instructions
on Nvidia's site. If reinstalling the drivers doesn't work, your video
card may have been damaged by the power outage. Connect the machine to
a different monitor first. If the problem follows you, you need to
replace the video card.
