Disk/Registry? Problem

K

Keith Snyder

It appears that I have a disk or registry problem. The Event Viewer->System
shows recurring Event Source: Disk
Event ID: 52

I'm running WindowsXP SP3; Dell 4700.

The disk is a Maxtor SATA 6Y080M0

Googling hastily, either disk, or PC card for disk, or Registry could be the
problem.

It appears that this disk is no longer available.

My system recently failed, first Outlook Express failed, then a logon failed
to load my user profile. I had a shop check the disk
and restore my system.

However, I still get Event ID 52.

Any pointers? One advice I read was to download the manufacturer's disk
utility tool. Who would that be today? Seagate?

Maxtor is a Seagate brand. However, as there is a Maxtor site, perhaps you
should look in it and in the Seagate site.

I hope I understood your question. Here is the message in the Event System
log:

The driver has detected that device \Device\Harddisk0\DR0 has predicted that
it will fail. Immediately back up your data and replace your hard disk
drive. A failure may be imminent.

It's a good idea to include such messages in your very first post - it is
the key to your question. You should now download and run the diagnostic
program that your disk manufacturer has on his home site. It will tell you
what to do next.

I did download it, Seatools from Seagate, but couldn't get it to run. Let me
try again. From what I read, the DOS version burned to CD may be what I
should have used.

Turns out I didn't read the instructions too good for the Windows version.

Anyhow, I ran the tests, and the disk is bad. Tomorrow I'm off for a new
disk.

Thanks everybody.
