Disk Recovery

I have a 200GB FireWire hard drive that's gone bad. I've been referred to
several data recovery companies. Has anyone out there ever used a recovery
service to get data back? How much did you pay?
Does anyone know any companies in the Washington, DC area that perform these
services?

Thanks,
Marc

It would have been _much_ cheaper to just put put a backup tape to his tape
drive each noght.)

We got a quote of >=700 Euro for possible recovery of a 40GB disk
(deathstar) from ontrack. We did not send in the drive, since
the data was not valuable enough, but I think that these proces
are reasonable.

And, yes, I fully agree about the backup. Another option is RAID,
and I have now all of my disks (except the w98 games partitions)
with automatic, nightly backup or RAID1/5 and less frequent backup.

You may have already tried this, but how about data recovery software such
as: Lost and Found, Easy Recovery, Spinrite, EBCD(Emergency Boot CD), and
the programs put out by the companies that make hard drives(Ontrack Disk
Advisor, Western Digital Data Lifeguard, etc...). I've used Lost and Found
and Easy Recovery and recovered at least 1/2 of the data in two different
occasions. There is also a web site for a data recovery company that is
cheaper than the usual folks, but I can't find the reference.
