disk management window blank

Opening computer management then clicking on disk management, the window
where all disks should be displayed is blank..empty. A button window appears
over that area with "The dependacy service or group failed to start" above
the ok button. Additionally, at the bottome of the blank disk management
window in the status line is "Unable to connect to logical disk manager
service". I discovered these errors when I attempted to reformat a new USB
WD external HD from FAT32 to NTFS. The only other drives I've added in the
past is a USB web cam and an external USB DVD writer...both operate fine. My
Computer sees the external drive and has labeled it and shows all properties
of it. Any help would be appreciated. TYIA.

Hi Quartet87,

Go to Start>Run and key in:
services.msc
Click on OK or hit ENTER

Scroll to locate Plug and Play and then double-click on it. Ensure that the
"Startup type" is set to Automatic and click on the Start button under
Service status. Click on OK.
Do the same as above for Remote Procedure Call (RPC), Logical Disk Manager
and Logical Disk Manager Administrative Service.

Thank you, Patti, for your quick response. All items you listed to check on
were already set to auto start-up and were running except Logical Disk
Manager and Logical Disk Admin Service, which were not running and each
showed to be set to manual start-up. I changed both to automatic then
clicked start.

The error message I got for Logical Disk Manager was ERROR 126: THE
SPECIFIED MODULE COULD NOT BE FOUND.

The error for Logical Disk Manager Admin Service was ERROR 1068: THE
DEPENDENCY SERVICE OR GROUP FAILED TO START.

Each error message appeared when I clicked start. I re-booted and checked
disk management again but the result was as the original.

Logical Disk Manager Admin Service depends on Logical Disk Manager service
being started in order for it to start.

Check your Windows/System32 folder for a file named dmserver.dll

There is also a registry entry for the Logical Disk Manager service, but I
am not currently at my WINXP computer in order to check what is in the
registry entry, am at the 2K computer at work where I can't muck around in
the registry :-(
