"Disk Full" message

Hi, I have a workbook with a few worksheets in it. The entire file is only 78,691KB. When I go to copy a worksheet to create another one for editing, I now keep getting "The Disk Is Full" message. My hard drive has 60% unused space. Why is this happening? How to fix

I think this can happen if you get too many .tmp files in, usually
C:\temp. Need to delete them. Excel works from a temp file, the
overwrites the .xls on disk on closing

Since hard drive was mentioned, presume that there is no
diskette involved as diskettes should not be accessed with Excel.

Amount of freespace would be checked at the time the
problem occurred (right?). .TMP files can be in a lot of
directories.
Eliminate unused files for performance (#elimxused)
http://www.mvps.org/dmcritchie/excel/slowresp.htm#elimxused

When noting an error it would be best to include the
error message exactly as seen. The word "The" was
included in the text body. Exact text makes it a lot easier
to search Google Groups, Google, or MS KB.

BrianB, Please fix the > and the < by your name if under your control;
if not under your control please advise

Hi David, I did check my computer resources data and it now shows 70% unused space. As far as the message I keep getting when trying to make a copy of the worksheet, a little window pops up and say's: Microsoft Excel (there is a large white "X" in a red circle at left) The disk is full. It does have the word "The" at the start of the message. I have even expirimented by coping the workbook as another name, delete all but 2 worksheet, try to make a copy of one of the worksheets and this message keeps coming up. I don't have a problem saving a workheet, only trying to copy the work sheet. What can people do for this

Hi Sam,
What is the complete exact and complete wording with
exact punctuation and newlines that you get for the message.

You say copying a worksheet not copying the workbook.
Are you trying to save, or is this just copying a worksheet
within the workbook and no save involved.

Is the worksheet protected. Is the workbook protected.

What version of Excel. What Operating System.
How are you making the copy, if by code - show code involved.
Is it to your c:\ drive.
Is a network drive or removable media involved.
What antivirus program do you have.

What if anything do you have in
Tools, Options, General (tab), default file location

When you work on a file, Excel makes a copy of the
file without a file extension and gobbledygook for the
filename. This can interfere with network security
administration and or antivirus programs. So is this
something that you do regularly or is anything different.

Check out the following MS KB article
XL2000: "The Disk Is Full" Error Copying Very Large Worksheet

also look for other articles "The Disk is Full" messages in

Have you tried searching the Knowledge Base,
Google Groups (newsgroups), and Google (web pages).
Because that is what we have to do.

When you find the solution, please tell us so that we
all know as well (feedback).

Hello David, Thank you for your direction. Here are the answers to your questions
1) The exact and complete wording is: The disk is ful
2) I am trying to make a copy of a worksheet within a workbook with no save involved
3) Neither the workbook or workspace are protected
4) I have Excel version 97. Windows 98
5) I right click the worksheet tab and select "Move or Copy". It has made no difference where I want it copied as to in front of worksheet 1 etc., or (move to end)
6) It is my c:\ drive
7) no network or removable media. It is my own personal stand alone PC
8) Norton Anti-viru
9) default file location is: C:\My Documents. I do have my workbooks in another directory that I work out of
10) The file extention question - I have not had a problem since using the workbooks/worksheets for a long time. Only last few days has the problem shown up. Nothing is different concerning anti-virus, etc
11) I did come across last night the XL2000 webs link you included. My understanding was I could only copy data/formulas into another worksheet or workbook but some things may not work correctly in the new space. I choose not to do this option. I will check out the 2nd web link you sent
13) Yes, that is how I found the 1st link you included
Thanks for your help, much appreciated
Sam
