I can not defragment. It just keep going at 3% for ever. Even in safe mode.
In safe mode the screen saver comes on even though I go in there to change it
to nothing. It goes back to some screen saving. This is frustrating. Any
idea? Thanks in advance!

How much free space does the drive have, in percentage?

What did you do to prepare for defragging?

Did you do a clean up first?

Did you do a chkdsk first?

Did you disable your anti virus first?

You can't disable the screen saver in Safe Mode. You can't even change
how long it waits before it kicks in.

if you are going to try defrag in safe mode, turn off the screen saver before going to safe mode.
be sure and remember to turn It back on when done.

I use Auslogics Disk Defrag.
but it still has some of the same restrictions the built one does.
like minimum space required, free of disk errors, etc.....

That won't work.

Alias, I have 37% free space. I clean first, chkdsk, disable the anti virus
and disable the screen saver in regular mode. Still it takes a long time and
stays at 3% for a long long time to a point that I simply stop the process so
that I can utilize the PC.

OK, so far, so good. Is the drive formatted in FAT32 or NTFS? If the
former, it is normal for it to take hours and hours to defrag. If it's
the latter, I don't know what to tell you.

The drive is fat32.

here is a helpful link with
details on troubleshooting the
defrag'r:

http://search.microsoft.com/results...t&qsc0=0&FORM=QBME1&l=1&mkt=en-US&PageType=99

one thing that is sometimes overlooked
is the swap file/virtual memory.

for example: if you had no swap file or
very little swap file space assign, then
it would reduce performance "greatly".

make sure there is sufficient
virtual memory. some configurations
can't handle automatic resizing of the
virtual memory. so there is a
custom size option provided that
will set the swap file to fixed size.

That's the reason it's taking so long. Set it to run over night and the
next time you format and reinstall XP, format in NTFS, assuming this
drive is were you have XP and your programs installed, usually the C:
drive. If it's another partition -- not the C drive -- you can use
Computer Management to change it to NTFS and then defrag it (right click
My Computer to get to Computer Management). You should, however, remove
any data from the partition before changing the format so as to not risk
losing data.

Also, how big is the entire drive? FAT32 does not play well with large
drives/partitions over 32 GB. If all you have is a recovery disc or,
worse, a hidden partition, I would be very pissed at whomever sold you
the computer and formatted it in FAT32.

I never have the screen saver on in Normal Mode and it's always on by
default in Safe Mode, both for XP Pro on two machines and Home on another.

db thanks for the link. I approached the defragmentation from Compmgmt.msc
as suggested per your link and worked like a charm in the normal mode in the
presence of virus protection. It did take a while but at least it finished.
Thanks again to everyone for the kind suggestions! Have a nice holiday
weekend.
