Disk drives being checked constantly

Suddenly my computer is frequently checking my cd/dvd drives and my a
drive for disks. It's making the normal sound when doing so. The
lights come on and such, so it's definately the disk drives being
checked by Windows.

How can I stop that, and what would make it suddenly behave that way?

It might be caused by anti virus software activity.
