Disk Cleanup Woes

D

Doug

I have used Disk Cleanup umpteen times over the past year with no
problems UNTIL NOW. The Cleanup pgm now hangs and then searches for what
seems far too long for temp files and then reports figures like
11,963,394 KB (today's reading) and as high as 18,730,599 KB of files
for deletion. The last time I used this pgm and checked the Temporary
Files for removal, it deleted half a dozen folders and parts of at least
eight others. I had to reinstall at least a dozen programs as whole pgms
and parts of others were eliminated.

I have checked the whole drive, checked ALL of the Temp and Tmp folders
and files. I can't come up with anything close to what is called for
removable. I am now scared to use the Disk Cleanup utility for fear of
another disaster.

I have gone the SFC /scannow route (in case some rogue prg had altered
the cleanup pgm) with no problems found.

Has anyone else had this problem?

Doug

p.s. These weird problems started right after I installed Microsoft's
"Works Suite 7". Is it possible that there is a connection? Just a long
shot.

It does sound like the directory structure is dodgy... Have you done a full
scandisk ?

Hi Nicholas...Yes I have done all of the routines for checking the
drive. Nothing unordinary.

A month or so ago, someone wrote a message describing a similar
situation to what I ran into, BUT I didn't pay much attention to it as I
had never heard of such a thing happening.

Thanks for the comeback.

You could get something like this on Windows ME version of Disk Cleanup if you edited the default values. I never let it run though to see if it was going to do what it promised. Were you an upgrade or something?

Thanks David...will give it a try.

Just try typing in Start Run
regsvr32 %systemroot%\system32\dataclen.dll

Hi David...Yes, I installed XP over Win98 as an upgrade.

Anyway, I typed in the command as you suggested. It worked like a charm.
I will keep a copy in case this happens again. I still don't know why
this condition developed but you must have come across this before.

Thanks for your assistance...

Is the subject Disk Check here ? I am a beginner . This is a long shot too because I have owned my first computer for 8 months and I have reinstalled Windows XP Home Edition about 15 times but have learned something through the proccess . MAYBE , there are too many System Restore Points , because turning off System Restore then restarting the computer and then attempting Disk Check has always started Disk Check for me every time after failing to start at first attempt . I did read of this in my lookabouts too . Remember to turn System Restore on again either before you run Disk Check or after you run Disk Check . It is a solution to a problem . However I discovered about three days ago all my computing difficulties were related to my incorrect installation of a Display Driver . I duplicated an installation because there was no obvious information about the location of the Driver and I bet many people were caught out . Nicholas ..... not Nicholas Kingsley

Thanks for the reply Nic...I finally resolved the problem thanks to

problems.

I have the same problem which occured after an abortive attempt to
install Win XP service pack2. Disk clean just hangs have left it
running all day, check in disk manager and you can see it using 100%
CPU. Cant think what the problem is. Have also checked the event log
and there is a problem with"Userenv" not starting at boot up, whether
this is causing the problem I don't know.

Is there anyone who can help?

Brian
