Hi:

I an running WinXP Pro on a T-40 Thinkpad (if it matters.) The Disk
Cleanup Utility hangs and will not work. When I start it, by clicking
on the properties tab, the progress bar opens, I get two green blocks,
and then it hangs. I have run chkdisk and it shows no problems. I
tired putting <%temp%> in the Start>Run and deleted all those temp
files, but still no joy.

Any suggestions? Many Thanks,

Ken

UNcheck the Compress Files option and try it again.

Hi Ken,

Disk Cleanup freezes during the Compressed File Phase: This edit corrects
the problem:

Disk Cleanup - Compressed Old Files Freezes (Line 48)
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

My problem is that the utility hangs whilst calculating the amount of space that might be saved through compression; not whilst compression is in progress. Do the previous tips address this problem?

More information
- I have two hard drives, the utility works OK on drive D but not on drive C (which includes my windows directories
- I imported line 48 from Kellys Korner. The import appeared to have been successful. I restarted the computer but the utility still hangs at point of calculating amount of space to be freed by compression of old file
- Noted somebody's advice to try utility after de-selecting "compress old files" option: Where do I find that option? ie How do I do this
- as noted by Dev above, when I cancel out of the hung utility, the utility appears to cancel out but the processs cleanmgr.exe continues to run. I use "end process" to stop it.

Thanks for the reply. I have never had "Compress Files" checked. I am
about to try the registry fix.

You're welcome...I'm glad it helped.
