disk cleanup--not running

The disk cleanup utlity does not seem to run. The first time I started the
utility, it was taking a long time to analyze how much space could be saved
by running the utility so I closed it. Now when I go back to the system
tools and select disk cleanup, the utility won't even start up. The system
is not infected with any viruses. I will be running spybot to remove any
spyware that may have been installed. What is the cause of this utility not
starting? How can I make it run?
