Disk check utility

When i try to do the disk check utility it says it can't be performed because
the disk check utility needs exclusive access to some windows files on the
disk. How can I do that I'm lost?

It will also ask if you want to run the disk check on the next reboot,
tell it yes and the disk will be checked the next time the computer is
rebooted.

Now it says the type of file system is NTFS. Can't lock current drive. Chkdsk
can't run because the volume is in use by another process. Would you like to
schedule it to be checked the next time the system restarts y/n. I'm still
stuck

I would guess you have some form of virus, perhaps a bios infection. It
would be hard to guess without some utility to tell you. I would save what I
could and rebuild the system.

some software like
norton can prevent
access to your disk.

but my guess is that
the reason you were
trying to run chkdsk
anyways was due to
something you allowed
to take control of
your system.

try following the recovery
console method again.

if the system is stuck then
you will have "no" choice
but to do a force shutdown.

to do this you will have
to press and hold in the
power button for 10 seconds.

then put your windows cd
into your drive and reboot
with it and into the recovery
console as suggested.

in addition to chkdsk
also run a fixboot and
fixmbr then try to reboot
normally again.

btw: be sure to disconnect
everything from your computer
except your mouse, kb, monitor
and power cord.

That's normal. There is something on that disk that the OS is using. I
assume this is your boot drive? Or a drive with a pagefile on it? Lots
of reasons.

Go ahead, answer y, and restart the computer. During the boot but
before windows loads, it will stop and run chkdsk.

Normal operation.

Tell it yes, to run it on restart, close it down, and restart the
computer. That's normal operation. Read the whole screen; it tells you
that; or it should.

He hasn't yet said he answered y to the question and done a reboot, OR
that he can't reboot. That needs to be tried first; I suspect it'll
work fine that way.
