Disk Check on startup (XP)

Ive recently encountered a problem whereby when I reboot, the computer
always goes into a disk check mode and a "press key to stop" function
is not available.

The disk check finds numerous lost clusters and other errors and the
whole process can take up to half an hour to complete. Fortunately I
dont reboot often but it is very annoying.

Anyone have any suggestions on how to stop this happening?

Immediately BACKUP YOUR DATA. It sounds like your hard drive is about to
fail. I'll say it again, immediately BACKUP YOUR DATA. When the drive fails
you will lose everything that is on it. If the drive is reporting lost
clusters every time chkdsk is run you may not be able to successfully clone
the drive to a new one. You may have to reinstall windows, then your
programs, then restore your backed up data.

One question I have that might help understand what is going on.... Do you
fix the problem when Disk Check finishes? Or do you ignore them?

But I agree backup you hard drive.

1) backup the hard drive
2) run a scandisk and defrag sesstion
3) get ahold of SpinRite 6.0 from grc.com
