I keep getting diconnected from my dialup ISP after a
minute or so of opening explorer. My wifes computer which
runs the same setup does not have this problem. I have
talked to the ISP and have confirmed it is not on thier
end. I have tried to use system restore to go to a
previous date in the last couple of months before this
started happening. I can not get system restore to
function right as it will go through the restore process
then tell me that my system can not be restored to that
date. This happens no matter what date I try to restore
to. My next step is to remove IE 6 and try to reinstall it
to see if that helps. Is this done by running the setup on
my XP disc? If so are there any watch outs? Also I have
scanned for viruses and have not found any problems. Any
ideas would be appreciated! Thanks! Dennis

Hi Dennis,

I would delete and recreate your DUN. Also check for update drivers for your
modem.

To reinstall IE6 (you can't uninstall it), start/run this line (copy/paste
to avoid errors):

rundll32.exe setupapi,InstallHinfSection DefaultInstall 132
%windir%\Inf\ie.inf

As to System Restore, once it is messed up all you can do is stop the
service, reboot and reinitialize it. All existing restore points will be
lost when you do this. To do this, start/run services.msc, scroll down to
system restore and double click it. Click the "stop" button and set the
startup mode to disabled. Reboot and undo these steps to restart it.

Bruce, I have talked to my provider more than once and
they have not been able to help. I have 2 other systems
plus my laptop that run on the same providerusing IE 6 and
do not have this problem so I am thinking it probably is
software related. As for the modem I have updated the
drivers. I can log on to my isp and open Outlook and leave
it up all day without a disconnect. The dropped carrier
only occurs when I have IE open. Thanks for the help.

And after all that I'd be asking my ISP some Q's or just changing ISP's.

Yes it can take some working out sometimes.
I've come to believe that sometimes there is a "clash" between the users
modem & the ISP's "modem". Telstra (Aust) a couple of years ago had a lot of
trouble with a lot of people getting dropped & were recommending a certain
external modem. After they updated their equipment, I installed the old
troublesome one & it ran faster than the external. (& never got dropped)
I forget what the brand of their original ones (at the ISP's) was called but
no doubt someone else will chime in with that.
