disc space is incorrect!!! what can I do???

Ltely i've upgraded my Win 98 to XP. i know for SURE that i have a large disc spase - 40 GB!!
now my computer showes that i ONLY have 1.99 GB TOTAL space and only 145 MB free!!! (when i click drive C properties
i had also a message that my computer doesn't have enough space
how can that be? please help me...
