I have a new computer with Windows XP pre-loaded by the manufacturer. All was
fine for a few days but then at every start up a disc consistency check is
run on disc C. this runs OK and does not report any faults.
The disc is not dirty - I have checked using chkntfs.
Event viewer system log reports:-
ASP 132 service failed to start.
System cannot find the file specified.
Event ID 7000
Source Service Control manager.

What is ASP 132 ???

Can you help
Thanks Clive

Hi Rick,
Thanks for your help.
Ref article 316506
I do have have an HP scanner and chkdsk does not run when the scanner is
disconnected.
However the scanner is not a Scanjet 5100c but a 3300c.
I did download an up to date driver from the HP site when I first got the
computer.
I got a warning from Windows that the software did not have the Windows
logo or tick of approval (can't remember which it was) and should not be
installed.
The HP installer program advised that I should ignore the warning and go
ahead - which I did.
I have gone to the HP site again and used a driver check program which
checked my computer and advised that I have the current correct software for
the scanner ??
The operation of the scanner has been intermittent since I installed it -
some times it works sometimes it dose not.
I didn't realise that the two problems were related.
Any more ideas?

Hi Clive,

The evidence is before you. The problem is the HP scanner drivers, and
you've proven that. Regardless of HP's request that you ignore the notice
about installing uncertified drivers, they are the problem. Your options are
somewhat limited:

- Bug HP about getting certified drivers, but don't get your hopes up.
- Don't use the scanner, or get one with certified drivers.
- Don't reboot or shut down/startup frequently and the chkdsk won't happen.
