Disc Cleanup hangs (Dell 2350 O/S XP)

Several days ago I canceled disc cleanup before it finished. Since then it hangs up most of the time I run it and I wind up canceling. The few times it completed the scan, it shows nothing to be cleaned (ie: nothing in the recycle bin when there are things in it.) I have run a check volume for errors and found none. I have a firewall installed; I run spybot S&D, ad-aware and Spyware Blaster every several days. I'm out of ideas. Any suggestions?
