Start>Programs>Accessories>Run> sfc /scannow

Run that command, and see if it fixes file errors.

The other thing to try is a System Restore to before the problem.
Start >Programs>Accessories>System Tools>System Restore.

hhmm the odd thing is my machine has never allowed a system restore. it goes
through the process reboots then says it cannot do it no matter which date i
set it to.

Hi,

Set folder options/view tab to see hidden and system files/folders. Then
check to see that this folder exists (I'm thinking that it doesn't) and if
not, create it.

C:\Users\<user>\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

Hi,

You can find copies of the missing "show desktop" and "switch between
windows" here:

C:\Users\Default\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Quick Launch

Simply copy and paste them to the folder you just created.

A tip for the future! If you are using Norton, disable it before trying to do
a SR.
If probs persist, do a SR in Safe Mode.
