Disappearing files after system restore

OK, my dad's computer froze then wouldn't start up and gave message that
windows xp was not loading. So we started in safe mode, restored the system
and that got it going again, but all the files were missing. So I went in
through windows and performed system restore again to a previous date and
that got most things back. However, when I was checking through the files to
see if there were all there, I couldn't locate certain document folders. I
could view the recent documents, and then if I navigated up from there, all
the document folders showed up, but then as soon as I navigated to another
folder, they disappeared. No matter how I got back to the right folders,
some of those document folders never showed up again. I've done searches for
the folder names with no results, and I repeated the system restore with the
same results.

Any clues??????

How far back was the system restored to?

And where were the missing documents being stored?
