Disappearing filenames

Hope this is the right NG.

Running XP. I have a folder (named images) with two jpg's
in it. While in filmstrip or thumbnail view modes the
filenames do not appear.

If I copy the pictures to another folder, the filenames
reappear.

If I copy other picture files to that folder, their
filenames disappear.

If I copy the images folder to another folder, the
filenames reappear.

If I rename the folder, the filenames reappear.

If I delete the folder and create a new one with the same
name, the filenames disappear.

I've never seen anything like it on any version of Windows.

Any ideas?

Hold down the shift key while turning thumbnails on to hide/show filenames.
