disappearing email

I am having a very perplexing problem. I have email disappearing. i can't
find it anywhere. it's not in the junk folder. I can't find it anywhere in
outlook and I wonder if it's going to some folder in windows. (I have xp)
The best suggestion I have had so far is that somehow, selected emails get
mistakenly tagged as corrupted and are put somewhere as a security measure.
as a test, I sent some email to myself while on the phone with my ISP. The
emails apparently never left my computer. They never showed at the isp and i
never got them in my inbox. does anyone have a clue how to solve this?
thanks
Lorraine

Do a search on your C drive for *.pst. When it is found, take note of the
path to the file. Then open Outlook and go to File - Open - Personal Folder
File and browse to the file and open it. See if your email is in there.

Hello Lorraine,
Please doublecheck the "view" you have set up in Outlook to make sure you're
not filtering any mail. Make sure it's set to "Messages" so that you can see
everything.
Did the mail that you sent to yourself show in your Sent Items folder or are
they still sitting in your Outbox? Have you seen any errors or messages of
any type pop up?

I tried that and no files came up. darn! what does *.pst stand for? at
first i mistakenly did *pst and 241 files came up. then I noticed the . and
redid it and nothing came up.

Thanks Kathleen.
On my computer, when I go to "view" nothing comes up that allows me to set
it to messages. It has reading pane options and stuff like that. I'm sorry,
but I must not understand where you're telling me to go. thanks for your
help. I've never seen any error messages and the messages I sent to myself
showed in my sent folder. so they did leave the "out" folder and went to
"sent," but they never appeared at the isp server and i never got them back.

Hi Kathleen.
I appreciate your help. I went to view and there was nowhere to set it to
messages. There were reading pane options and stuff like that. I'm sorry, I
must not understand where you're trying to tell me to go. when I did the
experiement to send myself email,. it left my out folder and did appear in
the sent folder but nothing showed up at my isp and nothing came back to me.
there are never any error messages. sometimes i hear the little ding noise
that indicates something has arrived yet nothing is there.

View>Arrange By>Current View>Messages

If the message gets placed in your Sent Items folder, that's a fairly sure
sign that your ISP's mail server accepted the message and that it's out of
Outlook's "hands".

Try starting Outlook once with the /cleanviews command line switch (See Help
and search for "command line" for the method).
