disappearing [+] and [-] boxes in Explorer

I use Explorer in Classic view, with "simple folder view" disabled.
This works fine as long as the cursor is over the folder pane, but when
the folder pane loses focus, all of the {+] and [-] boxes for expanding
and collapsing the tree disappear, leaving gaps in the lines that show
the tree structure. This really looks amateurish, and it's distracting
to have the boxes appear and disappear as the cursor passes over the
folder pane. Is there any way to make the boxes permanently visible?
Am I missing some obvious option in the folder view settings?

Hi Ray,

I find that this helps me to keep things easier to keep track of
what is opened in the folder tree. You might like it as well.

Thanks, that's a nice enhancement, even if it doesn't keep the [+]
boxes from disappearing ;) I was wondering last week why there
wasn't a different icon for open folders, and now there is.

A related question: is there an easy way to change the default folder
icon in Explorer? I searched a bit on vistax64.com and in Google but
didn't find anything. The standard one doesn't look much like a folder
to me -- more like a side-by-side refrigerator.

You can change them one by one by using these methods below, but
they will no longer have the thumbnail preview.

I found that, but doing them one by one is way too much work.
This 3rd party program "Vista Manager" will let you do it. It has
a 15 day fully functional trial period to do it in.

'Tweak and Optimize your Windows Vista - Vista Manager'

Thanks, I'll give it a try.
