I'm trying to find a way to get iexplore.exe to stop opening by itself.
I don't even use IE, I switched to FF months ago but constantly find
iexplore.exe opened in the task manager. No web page is open with IE
just the iexplore.exe in the task manager. If I do open a page with IE
and X it out that doesn't get rid of iexplore.exe in the task manager
either. I have to right click on it and end task it. I've blocked all
access to IE thru my firewall as well as a fake proxy setup of 0.0.0.0
in the IE settings and iexplore.exe still opens. I've tried the remove
windows components in the control panel to disable IE and it did
nothing. I've even tried to cut the iexplore.exe from the folder and
paste it elsewhere so it wouldn't be able to run but Windows created a
new iexplore.exe.
Can someone shed any light on why iexplore.exe keeps opening on its own
and how to get it to stop once and for all?

I do not know what applications you have that insist on
launching IE6 but you can certainly disable it. Simply
rename it from iexplore.exe to iexplore.ex. Make sure you
do it first in c:\windows\system32\dllcache, followed by
its default location in the Program Files folder.

Much of IE is integrated into - as in "part of" - the OS and cannot be
removed. That is, XP depends on code found in the IE section.

Firefox will cause your cat to develop warts.

The OP does not want to ***remote*** IE - he just does not
want it to pop up. This is easy to achieve.

Ya, I don't know either which program(s) keep opening IE. Wish I could
find out. I did what you suggested and it worked great. Thanks!

I've looked through this thread and nowhere do I see that the OP has run
the normal scans for malware. He may have done, but since it wasn't
mentioned and since malware would be one of the main reasons for IE
(any flavor) popping up, here are general malware removal steps:

If no scanning has been done, then it should be.

Ya, I've scanned with many different programs. The system always comes
back infection free which leads me to believe it's a "legitimate"
program trying to constantly open IE.
