How do disable autoplay once and for all? I have tried telling XP not to take any actions when
I insert a CD or flash card or turn on a USB drive, but XP always scans the drive, as if it is
looking for some file/content-type that it can ask about.

I don't want XP to do ANYTHING with ANY type of media. Ever. How do I do this?

Using TweakUI, under "My Computer | Autoplay", uncheck the specific
"Drives" letters, AND both "Types".

I also DISABLE the "Shell Hardware Detection" Service.

Read the replies, then keep detailed notes in a physical file in your
physical file cabinet noting how you disabled it. Because..... you
might HAVE to put it back later as some driver install CDs simply wont
run anyway but if autoplay works. Yes it's true, some driver CDs have NO
way of manually running/lanuching the cd.

Luckily, there are some free utils that will force autoplay to work in
you get in a bind later and really need it to work.
