An even quicker way:

Run -> Command ->

Microsoft Windows [Version 5.2.3790]
(C) Copyright 1985-2003 Microsoft Corp.

C:\Documents and Settings\Administrator>net stop messenger
The Messenger service is not started.

More help is available by typing NET HELPMSG 3521.

Of course, I don't have it started, but if I did it would be stopped right about now.
