disablePST and autoarchive

Regarding MS KB article KB258277.......

If a user has set up autoarchving to a pst file in outlook 2002 and then i
set the DisablePST registry fix, the autoarchving is not disabled, although
all of the options to administer autoarchving are disabled. It seems that
although tall of the options are missing, if AA was enabled before the fix
was applied, then it carries on working.

Any way around this?.

Yes, you can also disable AutoArchive itself by means of a Group Policy. The
Group Policy templates for Office can be found in the Office Resource Kit.

I could use a group policy if I had an Active Directory. We still use NT4
and the use of local group policies is not a viable option.

Ouch, do you users cooperate?

Send out instructions to disable AutoArchive by means of Tools-> Options->
tab Other-> button AutoArchive and have them apply these settings to the
folders. In addition to that notify them that all pst-files will be deleted
from the network within 2 months.

(voice ringing in my head "you don't always need technical solutions...")

No, i think you misunderstand.

Yes we are a coporate and yes we still have 5 NT4 domains. Also have 1
Win2K AD.

The users cannot see any of the options for autoarchiving in outlook because
we have used the disablepst registry fix. this stops the creation of new
pst's, and is supposed to stop autoarchiving. IT DEOS NOT WORK RE THE
AUTOARCHIVE

Well, if they won't follow company policy, then they already know their
..pst files are going to get auto-deleted before each backup. They'll
create the file but you'll delete them. Before the script deletes the
..pst files, record their owners so you can inform their manager to slap
their hands regarding violation of company policy. Change company
policy to match your demands (if you really are in a position to do so
rather than trying to enforce your own make-my-job-easier and unofficial
policy), disable the auto-archive disable, notify users they are to
disable the global Auto-Archive function in their e-mail clients before
some reasonable date, reenable the auto-archive disable, and delete all
..pst files. Anyone caught continuing to run auto-archive will get their
hands slapped? How? Well, just disable their e-mail account and send
them a paper memo informing them of such via interdepartment mail. That
for sure will get their attention.

My point exactly. But in order to alow them to reset the AutoArchive setting
you must allow them to reset their settings so enable the DisablePst
registry key. Inform them of the policy change and change back the setting
about two months later so anyone has enough time to reset it (especially in
the holidays season)
