I want my students to use only the mouse and the buttons that I've created to
advance the sides in a presentation. Is there any way to disable the keyboard
so that they don't use the spacebar or the arrows to advance the slides?
Thanks in advance for any suggestions.

You can have it running at a kiosk mode, where the 'Esc' key is the only key
enabled for you to quit the slide show.
To enable it, click Slide Show > Set Up Show.
Under Show type, select Browsed at a kiosk. Click Ok.
