Disable images in message content (outlook 2003) - show placeholders only

Hi,

I'm surprised I couldn't find a similar question in this group, although it
would more than likely have already passed on into archive. Anyway, no
matter what settings I use I still get inline images in my emails (already
played with settings under tools...options.... Sometimes messages from
outside outlook get turned into placeholders, sometimes they don't. I'm not
really interested why some are converted and some are not (probably due to
the sender's setup). I want the images to be turned off whether the emails
are coming from internal or external (anywhere).

The reason is that I access my PC from remote desktop via modem and read my
email. Even setting remote desktop to 256 colours makes images of any size
tiresome to download. Images from remote desktop are fully loaded (with a
full screen refresh), then fully loaded with the full screen refresh again;
it's really, really frustrating (why, oh why does remote desktop refresh
twice, once is good enough!!!!!!!). If I could disable images to show
placeholders only it would be a big help. Is there a free
VBA/COM/Managed/Other addin that does the trick? Reading email without
images is almost as fast as sitting at the desktop, even through a modem
(believe it or not), and it's more convenient than trying to synchronize
10,000 emails from a home installation of outlook (yeah, yeah, you can
restrict headers, but I'd rather use remote desktop!).

BTW, I know that a fix is to change the setting via Internet Explorer but I
want it for email only; I don't want to be messing with settings when going
through remote desktop, I'd rather it just be some simple set-once
configuration that allows right-click for image download for all email
messages.

No "search google" responses - been there, done that, found crappy
commercial products. Will appreciate very much a simple answer that works.

Outlook only blocks pictures that are linked to an Internet location not
when they are embedded.

The solution for you would be to read all your messages in Plain Text so
even embedded pictures won't be displayed (just as an attachment).
Tools-> Options-> tab Preferences-> button E-mail Options...-> read all
standard mail in Plain Text

-Create an Office 2003 CD slipstreamed with Service Pack 1

Thanks Roady, that'll do the trick reading from home. It's a shame though
that you can't have formatted html messages without the images.
