I have several customers that have asked if the F1 (help) can be disable from
Windows and Word and Excel and all Windows applications.
I searched knowledbase but could not find any thing on it.

Is there any place in the registry where I can edit the value to disable the
F1 key from taking us to HELP.

They do want to continue being able to use the help from the help menu, but
not thorugh the F1 key.

Thanks for your knowledge and replies...

Disable help?

How ironic. Most people come to these newsgroups not knowing about using
help files.

Why would they want to do that ?

Is the F1 key used in some particular legacy app they all use ?

If there's no built-in way in Windows to do that, it's a very menial task
to write a small utility that when run on a PC, will hook the keyboard
queue and eat all the F1 key presses. Any key(s), for that matter, can be
discarded, even key combinations. All except for Ctrl-Alt-Delete.

Did you press F1 and look for help on this?

Put an eraser/whatever under the key for a few weeks, they will learn the
habit of getting there a different way.

Actualy Ctrl-Alt-Del can be disabled. Some secirity software can do this
and I believe TweakUI can also (not sure on that, been a while since I
used it).

Some very funny answers... some thoughtfull...

The reason why they want to disable this key (F1) is because many of these
customers are constantly typing and editing. For instance, some of them are
working on huge/large spreadsheets and constantly pressing the F2 key to edit
the content of a very large cell. It's way faster to use the keyboard to
edit that clicking for the specific changes they need (and in general is fast
to use the keyboard than the mouse anyways).
The problem is that after a while, when attempting to press the F2 to edit a
excel cell location, by accident they press the F1 key and of course the help
comes up. They didn't need help but now closing the help slowes them down.
And if you think that they are editing 3 to 5 hundred cells per worksheet,
if they only press the F1 key 50 times by accident that's a lot of wasted
time.

Since you asked -- here's the reason. Don't ask what type of worksheet they
are changing, just know that they are people out there doing it...

Thanks,
Wil.

You are completly wrong about keys are faster than mouse.Keys merely block the part of the brain that is aware of time passing. Apple's research show people blank out for up to two seconds. Did you think they invented mices etc without research to back it up. Go to the library and read Tog's books (Bruce Tognazzini).

Well then just pop off the F1 key. Easy to do and that will stop the
Wintards from hitting it.
